For this lab test I basically used an online tool called Web Page Analyzer (http://websiteoptimization.com/) to test load times over a T1 1.44Mb Internet connection. I also checked the HTML source code of each site for a reference that tells me if 'Output Caching' is enabled (Rendered using cache profile:Public Internet (Purely Anonymous)).
Why am I doing this, well for 3 years I worked on number on projects including three public facing government websites, a vanilla CMS system, an Open ACS system, and an instance of Microsoft Content Management System 2002 (MCMS). Under a government backed initiative called 'Implementing Electronic Government' (IEG) each website had to meet a number of very strict Performance, Compliance, Functional and Accessibility requirements.
During this 3 years I had the pleasure of developing a site that made the Top 10 of the Sitemorse (http://www.sitemorse.com/) Local Government league no less than 5 times, I guess you could say i'm very passionate about this space.
In all I tested 86 Sites, in which only 13 loaded in under 10secs, and only 8 used SharePoint WCM 'Output Caching'. Obviously there are a number of other tests I could have run, IIS compression being one, and even though less than 10% of sites tested used SharePoint output caching, I like to think a number were cached using an Application Accelerator like ISA Server 2006 or Forefront TGM.
These are the top 12 loading sites from my tests, not one of these uses SharePoint 'Output Caching'. Tests were performed either on Sat 18th April (9pm - 11pm) or Sun 19th April (11pm - 2pm)
